da Vinci Surgery Q & A

What is da Vinci surgery?

The da Vinci Surgical System is a technology that allows surgeons to be more precise and to operate on their patients through just a few small incisions.

It consists of a magnified 3D vision system, as well as tiny, wrist-like instruments that can bend and rotate even more than the human hand. During surgery, the da Vinci technology provides doctors with a great deal of control that enhances their capabilities.

It’s been proven to be both safe and effective since the Food and Drug Administration approved the da Vinci system for gynecological surgery in 2005.

What is recovery like after da Vinci surgery?

The da Vinci Surgical System allows for very minimally invasive techniques. When compared to traditional open surgery in which the surgeon goes in through your abdomen, recovery is much faster and easier.

In general, there’s significantly less pain and scarring, and you can return more quickly to your daily activities. Often, there are also better clinical outcomes.

What types of gynecological surgeries are performed using da Vinci surgery?

Dr. Brodnik and other gynecological surgeons use the minimally invasive da Vinci System to perform a variety of procedures. Some of these include:

  • Hysterectomy (removal of all of part of the uterus)
  • Endometriosis resection (removal of endometrial implants outside the uterus)
  • Myomectomy (removal of fibroids in the uterus)
  • Sacrocolpopexy (repairing pelvic organs that have fallen or slipped)
  • Removal of ovarian cysts and tumors

Hysterectomies are increasingly being performed using the da Vinci Surgical System. In fact, it’s the No.1 minimally invasive hysterectomy technique performed in the United States.

Furthermore, da Vinci surgery is a good option for women who’ve had previous surgeries. In these cases, there may be lots of adhesions or scarring, and the da Vinci System gives surgeons better visibility and dexterity.
